Your brain is amazing! And it can make you feel amazing!

Your brain produces wonderful feel-good chemicals called neurotransmitters, that boost your mood, increase motivation, and enhance feelings of happiness and wellbeing. When we have a constant flow of these feel-good neurotransmitters, we feel more able to cope with day to day stresses, we feel happier and healthier! Depression, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, overwhelm, are all connected to low levels of these neurotransmitters.

There are 3 key strategies we can incorporate into our life that encourage our brain to release feel good chemicals. In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we call these the 3P’s. Positive thoughts, positive interactions, and positive actions, all of which help us to feel more confident and in control of our happiness. From a neuroscience perspective, strategies like these help us to exercise and strengthen the intellectual mind, in particular the left pre-frontal cortex, which is associated with optimism. And thanks to the power of neuroplasticity our brains are incredibly adaptable, so the more we do this the easier and more natural it becomes! It’s like brain training! We value the importance of exercising out body…. let’s start taking time each day to exercise our mind too!! Bring on those feel-good chemicals!! Let’s look in more details at each of these 3P’s……

Positive Thoughts

Looking out for the positives in our day-to-day life helps us enormously in reducing anxiety and stress that comes from negative thinking. Our brains are naturally wired to be negative (from an evolutionary standpoint, our survival depended on this negativity bias!) It is estimated that the average person has between 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day, and of these around 80% are negative, and 95% are the same repetitive thoughts as the day before. So, you can imagine how this can cause us to get pulled into a negative spiral of overthinking, ruminating over past events, and worrying about the future, neither of which we have any control over! This can become a vicious cycle, making us feel low, angry, anxious, and in turn encouraging yet more negative thoughts. The good news is we can re-train our brain to become more aware of the good stuff! By focusing purposefully on thoughts of what’s been good rather than dwelling on the negatives, we can change the way we think, and over time become naturally more positive, and happier!

Positive thoughts

Reframing how we think and looking with a renewed perspective really can improve how we feel. And it doesn’t have to be big things, it can be small things in your day, just increasing awareness of the positives and taking notice. Once you get into ‘noticing’ you can start a daily gratitude practice or as I like to call it “what’s been good” …. either thinking about these things in your mind, saying them out loud, or writing them down in a nice notebook or journal. You can even imagine positive things ahead or reminisce about happy memories, or things that make you laugh. Positive thoughts ahoy!!

Positive Actions/Activities

Doing things that make us feel good! These are obviously different from person to person. It might be going for a walk and being out in nature, taking part in an exercise class, swimming, completing a task you’ve wanted to do for a while, trying out a new recipe, gardening, clearing out the shed, planning a project, learning something new, or revisiting an old hobby you used to enjoy. Creative activities are good for bringing our attention to the present moment, knitting, baking, drawing, playing a musical instrument, perhaps there is something you’ve always wanted to try out, go with what makes you feel good! And as with our positive thoughts, it doesn’t have to be big things, it can be small things too – enjoying a cuppa in the sunny spot in the garden or stopping on a bench and listening to the birds sing. Making time for more of these positive actions and activities will bring more positive thoughts to enjoy when you think about what’s been good in your week! And the more we start to do the things that make us feel good, the more motivated we feel to keep doing them as we get a wonderful release of feel-good reward chemicals. Over time taking small positive actions becomes automatic and more effortless, and we start to notice that we feel more confident in our abilities and more positive in our outlook. Hurrah!!

Positive Interactions

Connection!! Humans are social beings, and we thrive on positive interaction. There is something quite wonderful about being in the company of our favourite people isn’t there! A sense of belonging. Humans are stronger together, our ancestors depended on being part of a tribe for survival, so connecting with others and positively interacting is a powerful human instinct, it makes us feel good with the release of feel-good chemicals that make us want to do it more! Connection is hugely important for our wellbeing, never has that been clearer to us than over the past 2 years, where we have felt the emotional impact of a lack of connection in our lives. Supporting one another, laughing together, kind words to people we meet, it all makes us feel good! And not forgetting our positive interactions with animals, be it in nature, or with our beloved pets, how much joy they bring us! Positive interactions ahoy!! Spend more time around those who lift you up, and make you feel happy to be around!

Positive connection

And a final note….neurotransmitters don’t hang around for long! After they are released, they are reabsorbed and recycled by cells in a process called re-uptake. So, we need to keep on getting our 3P’s to ensure a regular and balanced flow of these feel-good chemicals!
